Hello Neil and everyone,

Thank you for the warm welcome. My name is Michelle Ranville. I currently live in Toledo, OH and work in Detroit, MI.  I subscribed to the list because my husband and I want to start a small cohousing community in southeast Michigan. We are buying a piece of property near the Michigan-Ohio border that is about 6 acres with 3 houses on it. There will be 10 or 11 bedrooms on the site total, and we want it to be a communal living site of some sort. We are not decided on the level of sharing, etc. at this point. Frankly, besides living in group homes in the DC area for a few years, we don’t know that much about communal living. So we plan to attend the 2018 Cohousing conference in Boulder and visit a number of cohousing communities this spring and summer.

I am always interested in the research side of things because I worked in policy research in Washington DC for a long time before moving back to this area. I also have qualitative and quantitative research experience but not in this area. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute at some point, but for now I’m here to learn. And, Susan, your research on senior-only vs. multi-gen sounds interesting.

Happy New Year!

Best,

Michelle

Hi all,

I'm Susan Elster and have recently joined your listserv, wearing two hats.
First, I live in Jerusalem and am involved in trying to start a cohousing
community here. Among our 'qualitative' research-related efforts was to
gather myriad viewpoints on the question of senior-only vs. multi-gen
cohousing from both researchers and cohousing members. The document we
produced was helpful to our community in making this decision.

In addition, I work as research consultant at the Jewish Healthcare
Foundation in Pittsburgh, where I do both quantitative and qualitative work
- and a lot of writing. We have a robust elder care agenda, particularly
around community-based services and housing options that enable people to
remain active in their communities as they age. Cohousing is one among
several community housing models we featured at a recent planning charrette.

I look forward to learning more about the Cohousing Research Network, and
contributing when/if I can.

Susan
