Thank you for welcoming me to the Cohousing Research Network group. I am a
professor and department chair in Geography & Planning at Chico State and teach
courses such as Planning for Sustainable Communities and Sustainable
Transportation. I did my PhD at University at Buffalo on the political economy
of community gardens as their function as public and civic space.

I have had a long time interest in co-housing and take my students in
sustainable planning course on a field trip to the Valley Oaks Cohousing
project here in Chico. Since my husband passed away four years ago, I have
thought about cohousing as a way of living in community.

Last December, I changed the final assignment in my sustainable planning course
to a group project "Re Imagining Paradise" to consider different strategies for
providing affordable housing and rebuilding the communities that were decimated
by the Camp Fire in November. I contacted the cohousing group for information
as it seems like it would be a good option for some when rebuilding or
building new housing to replace the approximately 14,000 homes that were
destroyed in the fire Paradise, Magalia and Concow. I think there is potential
for some research here if any are wanting to collaborate.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself to the group. I am
planning on attending the Cohousing Conference in Portland in June. Perhaps we
can meet there.

Regards,

LaDona
