Re: Research on longevity and cohousing?

Hi CJ,

Our first set of national coho surveys back in 2011/2012 produced a report by Diane Margolis and David Entin of the community level information like Carol mentioned, and data from our household level survey were used in I think about 5 published papers. Our last round in 2017 produced a wealth of data that we only scratched the surface of analyzing (there’s a dissertation that used some of the data, a forthcoming paper from Heidi, and CRN has some presentation slides from coho conferences summarizing results—we had a focus on aging in community). The 2011/2012 sampling strategy was more rigorous so we tend to use those data when we share descriptives about cohousing communities, households and residents. I’ll attach some things and we can dig up more from the data if there’s a particular interest, and we are also quite open to sharing our raw data as well if anybody has an interest in doing some further analysis!

All the best,

Angela

Wonderful.  Where can we find the results?

Hi David and all,

In our recurring surveys (Carol—CRN is already doing this as you suggest, though only every 5 years to-date) we ask some related questions (age, perceived physical health compared to others of same age), but I don’t know of any study that directly gets at the cohousing and longevity question… yet!

All the best,

Angela, I thought there may be some questions in earlier research that might have some bearing on this question, or at least some national research on value of community vs. loneliness/isolation re: longevity.   David

I would love a study like that. We can do simple surveys every year to check in with cohousing at least as far how they are doing. How many houses built? How many members moved in? How many moved out? Could start getting simple data.
Anyone else interested in that?
Carol

Hi, CRN folks --

I received the video and question below from a member of Berkeley Moshav (my community, currently in development). Has there been any research along these lines? Could/should there be?

Thanks,

Hi Roger,
I think this is very interesting and may relate to cohousing. I wonder if anyone has done a study of cohousing and longevity.
