Thank you Belinda. Very helpful. I’ll definitely pass along whatever else I find.

Hi,

I am aware of a large study in the UK exploring a number of issues for seniors which found that social isolation was the equivalent of smoking a certain number of cigarettes a day in terms of impact on their health and life expectancy.

I’ll see if I can find a reference to it. I think some of this work is coming out of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging

And this meta-analysis looks useful too..

In a meta-analysis of studies examining the magnitude of effect of social isolation and loneliness on mortality in which important baseline health variables were controlled in the analysis, Holt-Lunstad and colleagues (2015) found a 29% increased risk of mortality over time from social isolation and 26% increase in mortality risk from loneliness. Interestingly, they found a 32% increased risk from just living alone, independent of social isolation.

I’d be interested in anything you come across, currently the first senior co-housing project In New Zealand is getting underway.

Hello all,

We are seeking government assistance and are exploring the possibility of employing social impact bonds to help finance a cohousing project in Israel. I’m aware of lots of research on impacts of isolation on morbidity and mortality – just haven’t seen estimates of the economic value of these impacts.

Is anyone aware of any work quantifying cohousing’s impact for this demographic? It would help quantify the savings of investing in cohousing – which could make a difference in this single-payer country.

Thanks much,

Susan Elster
